Atrium Chandelier
The Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission
Fairfax, Virginia

In the fall of 2011, The Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission installed the crowning touch to its new facility in Fairfax, Virginia: The Atrium Chandelier.

The imposing piece was hand-crafted with intricate pierced solid nickel alloy panels covering the main components, and dark bronze-tone structural ribs andcap for the body. With an overall height of 22 feet 3 inches, and a width of 5 feet at the widest point, the total weight of the chandelier exceeds 900 lbs. A supporting rosette is suspended from the ceiling’s skylight with 6 steel cables, and strands of sparkling crystals create a finishing tassel at the bottom. It was shipped from Morocco in the largest commercial plane available to San Francisco for wiring, and then traveled across the country for installation in the Cultural Mission.

The design was commissioned and created by Claudia Powell. Her initial research revealed a cultural tradition of intricate pierced metal work in Saudi lighting. She also incorporated the elegant curved shapes familiar in Middle Eastern architecture to fashion the chandelier installed there today.
